How To Paint Your Wooden Front Door

Step 1: Remove Door Accessories

• Take off doorknobs, locks, and other hardware.
• If leaving them on, cover with painter’s tape.
  

Step 2: Sand the Door

• Lightly sand with 120–150 grit sandpaper to remove old paint and smooth imperfections.
• Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
  

Step 3: Apply Undercoat

• Use a primer/undercoat suited to your door’s material. Ask our paint experts about which is the right primer for your door.
• Apply evenly with a brush or roller and let dry fully.
  

Step 4: Apply Two Coats of Top Coat

• Choose a durable, weather-resistant exterior paint.
• Apply the first coat evenly, let dry.
• Sand the door in-between coats to prevent drips and to achieve a more professional and hardwearing finish.
• Apply the second coat and let it dry completely.
